Summary

Operates heavy equipment utilized in digging and opening ditches, grading shoulders and slopes. Performs other rough grading to clear County rights-of-way, trenching, filling or back filling and snow removal. Operates asphalt equipment in road maintenance and repair work. Requires the use of valves to regulate the temperature and flow of asphalt ensuring a constant flow into the hopper to distribute material evenly. Operates mower to cut grass in County rights-of-way. Loads and places earth, rock, asphalt and other road construction and maintenance material. Fastens attachments to tractor with clevis or wedge pin hitches. Operates heavy equipment in successive passes over terrain to raise or lower terrain to specified grade following markings on grade stakes or hand signals. Greases, oils and performs minor repairs on heavy equipment as assigned. Coordinates equipment actions with on the ground crew member or other equipment operators using hand or audio signals to ensure safety standards are met and adhered to. Ensures all equipment on the job site is working in tandem to each other. Inspects truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil and water. Services and makes minor repairs to assigned equipment. Performs emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires, installing light bulbs, tire chains and spark plugs. Reports any major malfunctions or needed repairs to the supervisor and or Fleet Supervisor.

Qualifications

Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from an accredited two-year college or technical school; or six (6) months to one (1) year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

OPERATOR I can operate any four (4) of the following pieces of equipment proficiently: mower, grader, loader, large backhoe, track-hoe, low-boy trailer, large steel roller, scraper, dozer, and screen plant.

OPERATOR II can operate any eight (8) of the following pieces of equipment proficiently: mower, grader, loader, large backhoe,

track-hoe, low-boy trailer, large steel roller, scraper, dozer, and screen plant. In limited situations may serve as a trainer on

equipment for an Operator I.

 

OPERATOR III can operate any eight (8) of the following pieces of equipment proficiently: mower, grader, loader, large backhoe, track-hoe, low-boy trailer, large steel roller, scraper, dozer, and screen plant with extreme proficiency. At this level the incumbent may serve as a lead worker, see additional information under Direction Received section.

Additional Requirements

Operator I: Valid and current Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A or B with Tanker endorsement required.

Operator II, III: Valid and current Colorado Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with Tanker endorsement required.
